Safe & Compliant Every Step of the Way
Dating back to the industrial revolution, our products have kept water, water system equipment, and the people operating our water systems, safe. Preventing the over-pressurization of hot water vessels to prevent explosion was our earliest focus; today, water contamination and scalding are among the greatest risks we aim to address.
Water can become contaminated in the source water as well as in its distribution system after water treatment has already occurred. Additionally, the growth of pathogens continues to be a pervasive health threat to drinking water, particularly for populations most vulnerable to illness.
Temperature regulation is equally important to safety, as even small increases in water temperature can lead to scalding at faucets in homes and buildings. Scalding leads to over 100,000 emergency room visits per year in the U.S. One study published in the Journal of Burn Care Research found that hot water temperatures were unsafe in 41% of inspected urban homes.

Performance Monitoring with SentryPlus Alert® Technology
Challenge: Backflow preventers not only save water, but mitigate disease and injury risks by preventing used water or other contaminants from re-entering the potable water supply. Since the introduction of regulation that required backflow preventers to be widely adopted in the 1970’s, backflow prevention valves have been inspected minimally, only once or twice per year. Because a water system must typically be shut down to conduct an inspection, assessing valve performance more frequently becomes too cost prohibitive and impractical, thus raising the likelihood of failure that results in potable water contamination.
Solution: IoT-enabled backflow preventers with pre-installed test cock sensors that are activated with performance monitoring connection kits. This system continuously monitors
backþow valve performance and streams performance data directly to a customer’s Building Management System. Operators receive real-time alerts if critical limits are exceeded. Data streaming occurs around the clock, giving system operators powerful new tools that monitor and optimize equipment while conserving and protecting drinking water.
SmartSense® Excess Flow and Thermal Shutoff Valve
Challenge: Gas line ruptures and disconnections can be difficult to detect and can go unnoticed, leading to catastrophic safety hazards such as fires and explosions. Structure fires also can cause gas lines to fail and explode increasing risk to life, property, and first responders.
Solution: SmartSense, gas connector kit. Smartsense detects gas line ruptures, disconnection, and even fire. When a threat is detected SmartSense’s excess flow limiter restricts gas flow, preventing harmful build-up of gas within the building. Its fire safe shutoff uses a thermal ring that expands to stop gas from flowing when the valve reaches (350o-425oF), keeping people and structures safer from fire.
Big Bubba® BB-S101
Challenge: Many service lines that supply homes with potable water contain parts like pipes, solder, etc that contain metal contaminants. Other harmful, health-threatening contaminants like perfluoro octane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOS and PFOA) that are used in consumer products are widely found in wells that supply drinking water.
Solution: The BB-S101 Whole Home Filtration System filters out certain metal contaminants, PFOA/PFAS, chlorine, and cysts from water at its point of entry into a home. The system filters up to 84,000 gallons of safe drinking water, avoiding the need for single-use plastic water bottles. Equipped with a Water Quality Monitor, users are automatically alerted via text message or email when a filter needs replacement, helping to ensure that clean, filtered water is always available. The system is IAPMO & NSF certified, meeting the highest standards of quality and performance.
LFUSG-HWP Under Sink Guardian®
Challenge: Managing the supply and temperature of hot water is a year-round requirement for hospitals, colleges, hotels, and office buildings. Temperature fluctuation is common in plumbing systems and can be caused by seasonality, system pressure changes, and hot water heater malfunctions. Unmitigated temperature changes can cause scalding and contamination by waterborne bacteria like Legionella.
Solution: Watts Lead Free Under Sink Guardian with Hot Water Purge (LFUSG-HWP) helps ensure hot water temperatures at faucets remain consistent while minimizing the risk of scalding. When paired with Powers IntelliStation®, the LFUSG-HWP gives system operators the capability of individually sanitizing faucets at regular intervals in a whole-building loop to mitigate pathogen growth. This is especially important in buildings with variable occupancy like schools, dormitories, hotels, colleges; or those with vulnerable occupants such as hospitals and skilled nursing facilities.
Case Study: At West Friendship, Fire and Ice "Are Dealt with Accordingly"
West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department in Howard County, MD was having issues with snow accumulation around its fire station, which led to response delays and potential safety hazards for their firefighters and vehicles.
The solution was a dual system to address exterior snow melt, and an interior radiant heat system to increase energy efficiency.
